In Memoriam: Dr. Jaisingh (Jai) Ghorpade
Dr. Jaisingh (Jai) Ghorpade passed away after a long illness on July 4, 2013. He was a professor of management at San Diego State University from 1965 – 2000. He taught classes until 2005 and remained active with the university as an emeritus professor until 2012. During his time at SDSU, he was recognized as an "Outstanding Professor" four times.
"I recall when I came to San Diego State University in 1999 and Jai reached out to me," said Dr. Gangaram Singh, interim dean of SDSU's College of Business Administration. "We instantly connected because Jai understood industrial relations and the value of employee voice. Along with Dr. Jim Lackritz, we published a number of articles on employees preferences for voice, and our research evolved into understanding the porosity of the Jeffersonian Wall. I also remember with appreciation Jai and Suzanne's hospitality as they comforted our child on a crying marathon. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Jai for his years of contribution to the College of Business Administration and San Diego State University."
"Jai was a detail-oriented and caring instructor, who was admired by many students," said Dr. Jim Lackritz, SDSU professor emeritus. "Jai was highly sought out as an advisor for masters' theses in his professional area and he was an outstanding researcher with many publications is the fields of human resources and social psychology."
Jai earned his bachelor's degree at Wadia College in his native India in 1957 and came to the U.S. in the early 1960s. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1968. Jai lived in La Mesa, California at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne.
