Honoring the Best of the Best
Three SDSU faculty members were recently honored with the inaugural College of Business Administration Teaching Excellence Award.
Management professor, Michelle Dean, management information systems professor, Bruce Reinig, and finance lecturer, Frank Ryan were chosen for the annual award based on a list of criteria that includes their “demonstrated command of their subject matter, skill in organizing and delivering materials and incorporation of ethical and global perspectives” into their teaching agendas.
The winners were chosen by the members of the college’s Faculty Development Committee and announced on December 5, 2014. All professors and lecturers who meet the standards set forth by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) are eligible to apply for the award.
Dr. Michelle Dean
Dr. Michelle Dean has been no stranger to awards and recognition in 2014. This past spring, she was twice named “most influential faculty member” by two different top management students; she was honored by the college with the annual Faculty Service Award; and she was presented with the 2014 Dan R. Cornthwaite Luminary Award for Outstanding Advising by the university. In addition, Dean founded and serves as faculty advisor for SDSU’s chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) which was recently recognized as the Outstanding Student Organization at SDSU and as one of the best student chapters in the U.S. by SHRM’s national organization.
“I am very honored to have my work with our students be recognized with this award,” said Dean. “This honor is especially meaningful to me because I am receiving it from my peers.”

Dr. Bruce A. Reinig
Dr. Bruce Reinig, who specializes in teaching statistical analysis and business analytics, has been recognized on multiple occasions for his performance in the classroom and many contributions to the College of Business Administration. In 2010, he was awarded the Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributor for the College of Business Administration which is the most prestigious faculty award given at SDSU. In 2012 and 2014 he was selected as the “faculty of the year” by the students of the Sports Business MBA program.
“It is an honor to receive this recognition from my colleagues,” said Reinig, “I’ve worked with many excellent teachers in the college of business over the years and I feel fortunate to work in an environment that places such a high value on teaching.”

Frank Ryan has won multiple teaching awards, and like colleagues Dean and Reinig, he was recognized during the 2014 commencement ceremonies as a “most influential faculty member” by the top finance graduate student. Since he began his career as a finance lecturer in 2001, Ryan was named by the Executive MBA students for the fourth time as “outstanding faculty member” in 2014 and was given the same honor by the SDSU’s Sports Business MBA students in 2013.
“I am thrilled by the award especially as it was chosen by the faculty and there are so many great teachers at the College of Business,” said Ryan. “I’ve had a lot of great experiences at SDSU over the past 14 years and receiving this award is definitely one of the best.”

“We are excited to be able to recognize and honor the amazing professors we have at SDSU’s College of Business,” said John Francis, management professor and head of the Faculty Development Committee. The only hard part was being limited to choosing three winners from among the applications."
