Curtis Hawes – Second Chance Beer Company

Chief tasting officer would be the dream job for beer lovers everywhere.

Meet Curtis Hawes – he’s living that dream. Plus, he’s the co-founder and operations manager for Second Chance Beer Company, which is located in a 12,000 square-foot space in the Carmel Mountain Ranch area of San Diego.

Second Chance Brewing: A good look inside Second Chance Brewing

Hawes (’09, MBA) was working at Rock Bottom Brewery when he met award-winning brew master, Marty Mendiola and the two started working on plans to launch their own brewery. They officially opened the doors to the public on September 5, 2015.

When asked why they named their new business “Second Chance”, Hawes said they went for the obvious “It’s our second chance after leaving Rock Bottom Brewery. The main message is that life is short and a second chance is a fortunate event. So if you get one, take advantage of it. Seize the day.”

It’s a TON of work, so if you’re not passionate about it, find something else you love and pursue that.

While Second Chance Beer Company may be new to the San Diego craft brew scene, they have already found success in a crowded market. “We are getting busier each week,” explained Hawes. “Currently, we can be found in about 60 bars and restaurants around town. We will also start canning our beer in February 2016.”

As for budding entrepreneurs who are considering starting their own breweries, Hawes says to proceed with caution. “It’s a TON of work, so if you’re not passionate about it, find something else you love and pursue that.”
