Outstanding Faculty Members Honored

On December 7, three SDSU faculty members were honored with the second annual College of Business Administration Teaching Excellence Award.

Marketing professor, Andrew Baker, accountancy professor, David DeBoskey, and marketing lecturer, Lois Olson were chosen for the annual award based on a list of criteria that includes their “demonstrated command of their subject matter, skill in organizing and delivering materials and incorporation of ethical and global perspectives” into their teaching agendas.

“We are excited to be able to recognize and honor the amazing professors we have at SDSU’s College of Business,” said John Francis, management professor and head of the Faculty Development Committee. “The only hard part was being limited to choosing three winners from among the applications."

All professors and lecturers who meet the standards set forth by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) are eligible to apply for the award. The winners were chosen by the College’s Faculty Development Committee.

Since arriving as an assistant professor of marketing in the fall of 2011, Dr. Andrew Baker has had a substantial impact on the College of Business and its marketing students. In 2012, he was chosen as the Most Influential Faculty Member by the college’s top marketing undergraduate and he was honored with a faculty award for Outstanding Teaching in 2014. He has also played a major role in developing the courses that focus on ecommerce and social media marketing, marketing analytics and sports marketing research.

“The many exceptional College of Business teachers have continuously inspired me to be the best educator I can possibly be,” said Baker. “It is a wonderful honor to be acknowledged with this award, as it means my colleagues recognize I am also committed to the educational mission of our college. I would like to thank all of the faculty members who have cultivated a college-wide culture of making teaching excellence a key priority.”

Associate accounting professor, Dr. David DeBoskey, has made it his mission to serve the students of SDSU’s Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy. He was the faculty advisor to the students of Beta Alpha Psi, leading them to be recognized as one of the top chapters in the nation and he is known for his commitment to mentoring students as they transition into their financial and accounting careers. He was also selected by the college’s top accounting undergraduate as their Most Influential Faculty Member in 2013 and 2014.

“I am truly honored and humbled by this award,” said DeBoskey “It truly punctuates my teaching mission and inspires me to be even a better teacher and mentor. I am truly grateful to my colleagues for selecting me, as I know there are tremendous teachers in our college that deserve this award as well.”

Lois Olson

Lois Olson

Long-time SDSU marketing lecturer, Dr. Lois Olson, has been a very active leader in developing the marketing curriculum for the college. She is currently leading a group of five California State marketing faculty members in an effort to use technology to re-design and implement a course strategy that will allow for more effective teaching of a greater number of students. She has also led an annual (now bi-annual) student learning experience in China and has been named Most Influential Faculty Member by the college’s top marketing student three times in the past eight years.

"I love my job every day since I get paid to keep learning by teaching students how to master the practical skills they need as managers,” said Olson. “I get great satisfaction in watching the students using the skill sets we instill in them at SDSU’s College of Business. I particularly love my job today as the recipient of this award from my peers."
