Simple, to make a difference. As a VITA volunteer, you can help people in your community to prepare taxes free of charge, especially low-income families and foreign students.
To serve as an SDSU VITA Volunteer, you need to register for ACCTG 409, a Credit/No Credit course associated with VITA. Students are eligible for up to 3 units of ACCTG 409 but note that each unit requires an additional 2 hours of volunteer time. Volunteers should have completed their introductory tax course (either ACCTG 332 or ACCTG 624) and completion or concurrent enrollment in ACCTG 503 is suggested. You must be prepared to attend the in-class training sessions that occur prior to the opening of the VITA site and you are required to pass the IRS exams to be a VITA volunteer. SDSU VITA requires that you pass the Volunteer Standards of Conduct, Intake/Interview and Quality Review, Basic, Advanced, and Foreign Student exams prior to preparing any tax returns. Failure to complete these exams by the due date will result in a grade of No Credit.
Each unit of ACCTG 409 requires that you work at the SDSU VITA site for at least a 2 hour block on Fridays during tax filing season. The times are commensurate with the class times for each section (12 noon-2:00pm; 2:00pm-4:00pm; and 4:00pm-6:00pm).
